陽は, また昇る (“Hi wa Mata Noboru”) had to be the catchiest tune in 2008.  An uplifting song devoted to Japan’s salaryman.

I placed this under Mai Satoda’s category because she is the most recognizable member I believe and the real reason I even know about this song.  Aladdin was formed from groups on “Quiz Hexagon II”- クイズ!ヘキサゴンII,a Japanese quiz variety show on Fuji Television. The ladies are from Pabo and the men from Suchishin –羞恥心. In the PV Mai wears a green dress in the concert footage.

Mai Satoda (second from right on the CD cover) performs also as ‘Mai Satoda with the Goda Family’ – 里田まい with 合田家族, another Quiz Hexagon II outfit. We will upload that fun video in the near future.

Japanese punk band

the scott vegetables

There’s a big punk scene in Tokyo which features a lot of unsigned bands such as the scott vegetables. We figure we should devote some space to one of these bands. Being a fan of vegetables I was obviously drawn to this band.

Originally from Aomori prefecture -青森県 – the band consists of three guys.. lead vocalist/guitarist Kyo (Kyousuke Sibata) bass/vocalist Aokids (Thuyoshi Aoki?) and drummer GK.

They have a couple of demos out. One is 『LIVE DEMO 2006』 and the other is 『VEGETABLES FOR ALL, VEGETABLES FOR…

Kyo is really a talented guy! They are a tight band. Please check their video on youtube and visit their myspace: www.myspace.com/thescottvegetables

World of dōjin music 音系同人

Posted in dōjin music with tags , , on June 13, 2009 by jpoptoday

We fans and followers of Japanese pop culture in the west are always discovering new things. Just this morning I’ve learned about the dōjin scene and dōjin music 同人音楽.

Dōjin is not a specific style of music but a particular way of publishing, something like the term “indie.” Dōjinshi are independent makers of manga and makeup the largest part of dōjin.

Dōjin music, also known as otokei dōjin – 音系同人- consists mostly of fan’s arrangements of dōjin video game music.

Here’s singer miko performing with dōjin troupe IOSIS – イオシス. The song’s title is 「魔理沙は大変なものを盗んでいきました」 (Marisa wa Taihen na Mono wo Nusunde Ikimashita) or “Marisa Stole the Precious Thing.”

IOSIS plays songs of Team Shanghai Alice’s video game “Tōhō Purojekuto” or 東方Project, made by Japanese game maker ZUN.

Dōjin conventions, the largest of which is called Comiket – コミケット – is held twice a year; once in August, and once in December in Tokyo International Exhibition Center or Tōkyō Biggu Saito – 東京ビッグサイト.,

Orthodox metal anyone?

陰陽座 (Onmyouza)

Onmyo-Za – 陰陽座 – are a five piece metal band who has been rocking now for ten years.

They play “orthodox” metal comparable to Iron Maiden, mixed with elements from Japanese folk and pop. Since their debut, they have appeared in traditional clothing characteristic of Japan’s Heian period.

The band consists of one woman and four guys. Two vocalists share the limelight. Female singer Kuroneko – 黒猫 – and bass player/songwriter Matatabi -瞬火. Their songs mostly deal with Japanese folklore like”oni” –鬼 (demons.)

Here’s their 2004 single “Akki Hogan” ~ 『悪忌判官』 which reached up to # 30 on Oricon chart:

We really like the music of this series “Soreike! Anpanman” -それいけ!アンパンマン the popular anime produced by Nippon Television Network Corporation.  The television series has been on the air in Japan since 1988.

No English subtitles available at the moment. If anyone has videos of concert performances of Anpanman please let me know.

A Blast from the Past!

It’s been over twenty years since the breakup of Candies – キャンディーズ – the very popular three girl group consisting of Ran, Sue, and Miki.

They had eight top 10 songs from 1973 to 1978, including  年下の男の子  (“Toshita no Otoko no Ko”),  春一番 (“Haruichiban“), 夏が来た! (“Natsu ga Kita!), やさしい悪魔 (Yasashii Akuma.”)

Here is“Haruichiban” which reached # 3 in 1976:
